Kayak storage, Finland

A practical kayak storage was built in the beautiful coastal scenery of Helsinki.

Helsinki Paddlers Association (HeMe) built a new kayak storage at their Mustikkamaa, Helsinki base. Thanks to the size, location, and large terrace of the storage, it has been extremely functional and practical. Inside the storage, sturdy shelves/racks have been built to store nearly 50 kayaks/canoes and other paddling-related equipment. The storage is designed so that one end can be completely opened with three sliding doors, making it easy to load and unload the kayaks. The kayaks can be lifted from the storage onto the large terrace and prepared for launch before hitting the water.

The doors themselves were built from wood, and the frame was reinforced with flat iron framework. The sliding track systems were implemented using Helaform’s 150 series. There are two track lines in total, with three doors sliding on them. The K-150 track was mounted with SK/2-150 double wall brackets, and LKU-150/100 mm were used for the track joints. The doors are connected to the tracks with PPS-150/steel hangers, and the door movement is limited by KP-100/150 stoppers. Although fewer bottom guides would have sufficed, the client opted to install several due to demanding wind conditions. The bottom guides used were AO-22 bottom guides with two bearings each.
